Meeting Sara Dela Rippa

Sara Dela Ripa is the winner of the 2018 Cal Poly Innovation Quest Competition for her simple and accurate blood clot diagnostic device. This device determines if a person’s blood will clot or not within a two-minute period of time. Sara’s main goal is to treat postpartum hemorrhage victims who suffer from extreme blood loss during child birth. With this diagnosis, doctors will be able to quickly determine if a mother in labor will need blood clotting factors injected into her system to help clot the blood. While Sara is well on her way to getting the product on the market, there is still much research and refinement to be done to create a more fool proof, cost effective and environmentally friendly device. Currently, it is difficult to place a precise dosage of blood on the testing paper. If too much or too little blood is used, then the test could be ineffective. The testing paper is also encased in a plastic layer that is non-recyclable nor biodegradable. Sara hopes to address these problems in the near future.
